Waveform Inversion (WFI)

Waveform inversion (WFI) uses the waveform shapes and times of seismic data to develop high-fidelity velocity models for seismic imaging. Waveform inversion delivers an enhanced image in less time, helping oil & gas companies reduce risk and cost in their drilling programs. Because the technique is fairly new, our GX Technology team is exploring ways to further improve it.

The WFI Workflow

Using traditional methods such as auto picker (APK) and tomography to build an initial model, a forward model is then constructed by predicting how a single pilot trace and the velocity model would affect the seismic section. Comparing the field seismic data and the forward model, our team calculates statistics that show differences between the two models and builds a map highlighting those differences. If the differences are significant, we utilize that map to modify the initial model and restart the process.

Benefits of WFI:

  • Allows us to build a velocity model faster
  • Requires little hands-on involvement from technical team
  • Produces a more accurate model for improved imaging
