Exploring New Frontiers

Around the globe, as demand for hydrocarbons continues to increase, expanding exploration has become critical. To provide oil & gas companies with new information, insights, and prospect generation opportunities for under-explored or unexplored frontier basins, ION created BasinSPANS. Since delivering GulfSPAN in 2002, ION's GeoVentures group has amassed over 250,000 km of depth-imaged data in virtually all the major frontier basins around the world.

BasinSPANS are basin-wide seismic data programs that were acquired and imaged using the most advanced geological and geophysical technology available. SPANS are custom designed to provide critical insight into the geologic evolution, deep basin architecture, and depositional and structural history of a petroleum system.

BasinSPAN Highlights:

  • Collaborative program design - Surveys are designed in collaboration with regional geoscientists and experts within participating E&P companies.
  • Advanced geophysical technologies - Data is acquired using the most advanced source, acquisition, and streamer steering technologies and is processed by GX Technology, a leader in depth imaging.
  • Basin-scale understanding - Unlike typical multi-client speculative (spec) data libraries, BasinSPANS feature imaging and interpretation of entire petroleum systems, including source, migration, and trapping mechanisms, and provide analysis of thermal and tectonic basin evolution.

SPANS deliver insights that help to quantify and manage risk factors and identify more drillable prospects, including:

  • Source rock distribution
  • Regional sediment fairways
  • Migration pathways from source to reservoir
  • Identification of deeper targets
  • Higher resolution images of shallower targets, with enhanced definition of faults and salt sheets

Each SPAN dataset is delivered with an Interpretation Report that provides new perspectives on regional play-types and prospect opportunities for the clients involved.
